A sign with colored text in one command: formats for Java 1.20+, older versions and Bedrock.
Sign text is set with /setblock, which places the sign block with its lines filled in.
The format depends on the version: before 1.20 the text lives in Text1–Text4 fields, and from 1.20.3 it lives in a front_text block that also carries a colour and a second side.
The tool picks the right format for the selected version and builds the finished command.
Enter the sign coordinates and the direction it faces.
Type up to four lines, adding colours with codes like &c, &l.
Pick the wood type and whether the sign is wall-mounted or standing.
Copy the command and run it in game or from a command block.
Colour lives in the color field of front_text from 1.20. Older versions have no coloured text at all — only plain text. Bedrock also does not support § codes on signs.
From 1.20 there is a back_text block that holds the reverse side. This works for standing signs, not hanging ones.
Roughly 15 characters per line. Longer text either won't fit or gets cut by the game.
Colors via & (e.g. &a, &6).
